Hakuto-R Mission 1 by Japanese ispace Inc. is the first privately-led Japanese mission to land on the lunar surface. This attempted today to set softly to the site in Lacus Somriourm.
The lander was launched into space on 11 December 2022 and after a five-month travel time and 1,400,000 kilometres travelled, Hakuto-R headed for landing on 25 April 2023.
Unfortunately, communication with the lander was lost during the final moments of descent to the lunar surface. Very likely this was because of a loss of propellant in the final stage of landing that led to a rapid descent and hard landing on the lunar surface.
Along with the one-ton weighing lander, a small rover Rashid made by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre of the United Arab Emirates and JAXA's SORA-Q transformable lunar robot were lost.
